Matthew Spence, MD, MS, grew up in Hamden, Connecticut and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in neuroscience on the Mind, Brain, and Behavior track, and a secondary field in economics. He subsequently matriculated at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

During medical school, Dr. Spence completed the five-year MD/MS program, earning a Master of Science in Translational Research. Under the mentorship of Anuraag Parikh, MD, his master’s thesis focused on modeling invasive characteristics of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using three-dimensional patient-derived organoids to identify molecular pathways associated with tumor aggressiveness and potential therapeutic targets. In 2026, he was the recipient of the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Severinghaus Award for Excellence in Leadership in recognition of his contributions to mentorship, student organizations, and the medical school community.

Currently, Dr. Spence’s interests include leveraging precision medicine to improve patient outcomes and advance personalized approaches to care. He also has a strong interest in medical education and is committed to supporting the development of trainees at all levels.
