Maryann Zhao, MD, grew up in San Diego, California and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Pomona College with a degree in molecular biology, where she was also recognized as an NCAA All-American in tennis. Prior to medical school, she conducted research in cancer genomics and immunology at the Broad Institute in the lab of Aviv Regev, PhD.

Dr. Zhao subsequently matriculated at Harvard Medical School, where she graduated cum laude from the Harvard–MIT Health Sciences and Technology program and received the Janee and Paul Friedmann, M.D. ’59 Surgery Prize. At Harvard, she led research with Ravindra Uppaluri, MD, PhD, at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to develop 3D organoid models of HPV-negative head and neck tumors and applied genomic approaches to investigate immune responses to neoadjuvant immunotherapy. She also studied patient-reported outcomes in otolaryngology with Matthew Naunheim, MD, MBA and socioeconomic barriers to cochlear implantation with James Naples, MD. 

Dr. Zhao’s interests include cancer genomics, immunology and healthcare access. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys playing tennis, running and bird watching.
