Dr. Battistella is an Investigator at Mass Eye and Ear. He earned his MSc in biomedical engineering from Politecnico di Torino in Italy and earned his PhD in neuroscience from the Lemanic Neuroscience Doctoral School at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. He completed two postdoctoral neurology fellowships: one at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a second at the Memory and Aging Center at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Battistella's research focuses on decoding the neural mechanisms underlying neurological voice disorders. He has a particular interest in addressing the relationship between neurotransmission, brain function and brain structure. His research utilizes Dynamic Causal Modeling, graph theory and machine learning as powerful approaches to studying large-scale brain networks and identifying imaging markers of disease. He also utilizes ultra-high-field MRI scanners to characterize the myeloarchitecture and metabolic correlates of the speech motor control system in-vivo.

Through his research, Dr. Battistella aims to provide a more fine-grained analysis of the biological correlates of neurological voice disorders. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed papers and regularly presents findings of his work at national and international conferences. He has trained and supervised more than twenty students, research staff, clinical and postdoctoral fellows on image processing in clinical research.
