Dr. Vinay Rathi Discusses the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) in JAMA

In anticipation of the release of the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) scores, which expected later this month, a recent article published in JAMA discusses what we will learn from them and where this system should go next.

Lead-authored by Vinay Rathi, MD, a Harvard Otolaryngology research track resident, this article explores the aspect of MIPS found to be problematic and offers suggestions on how to improve the quality of patient care moving forward.

“Although the goal of measuring clinician quality comprehensively across all specialties while minimizing reporting burden is laudable, the resulting multitude of measures and options in the MIPS has created a level of complexity that likely precludes meaningful comparisons. Patients, clinicians, health care organizations, and policy makers must ask whether the MIPS can be salvaged,” writes Dr. Rathi.
