Drs. Krish Suresh and Phoebe Yu Awarded CORE Grants

Krish Suresh, MD, and Phoebe Yu, MD, MPH, two otolaryngology–head and neck surgery (OHNS) residents at Mass Eye and Ear, were recently awarded Centralized Otolaryngology Research Effort (CORE) grants by the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF).

CORE grants are considered major milestones for trainees eager to advance their academic research careers. Under their respective grants, Drs. Suresh and Yu will each lead separate research projects under the mentorship of Mass Eye and Ear faculty.

Dr. Suresh will lead the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) model for measuring the tumor volumes of vestibular schwannomas—common, benign intracranial tumors. The model could help physicians treat these tumors, many of which can impact hearing and balance as they grow along the vestibular nerve. Mass Eye and Ear clinician-investigators Matthew G. Crowson, MD; D. Bradley Welling, MD, PhD, FACS; and Daniel J. Lee, MD, FACS, will support Dr. Suresh’s project in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Yu will focus her project on obstructive sleep apnea, a common comorbidity among surgical patients. More specifically, she will assess changes in sleep and respiratory measures among patients with sleep apnea who undergo sinonasal surgeries. Working alongside Mass Eye and Ear clinician-investigators Phillip A. Huyett, MD; Neil Bhattacharyya, MD, FACS; Benjamin S. Bleier, MD, FACS; Stacey T. Gray, MD; Robin W. Lindsay, MD; and George A. Scangas, MD, Dr. Yu hopes her research will help inform evidence-based practice about patient safety in this specific cohort of patients.
