Dr. David Jung Appointed Associate Program Director of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Research
Engagement in research has long been a tenet of the residency program. Since 2016, Dr. Jung has served as director of the program’s Issues in Research Course. The course, created and previously led by Steven D. Rauch, MD, Professor of OHNS at Harvard Medical School, is a novel program designed to introduce residents to research methodology. Alongside Dr. Rauch, Dr. Jung also leads the residency program’s two-year research training track. Supported by a T32 grant from the National Institutes of Health, the track allows one resident in each class to pursue an extra two years of research training during their residency training.
In his new role, Dr. Jung will continue to oversee the Issues in Research Course, broaden the research curriculum and advise residents in the pursuit of their individual research projects.
“Witnessing Dr. Jung’s meteoric rise as a world-class surgeon-scientist has been a genuine pleasure for our entire department and hospital as a whole,” said Derrick T. Lin, MD, FACS, Associate Chief of the Department of OHNS. “I am confident his innate leadership will only continue to help our trainees produce cutting-edge findings capable of touching countless lives worldwide.”
Dr. Jung graduated from Harvard Medical School and earned his PhD in genetics from Harvard University. He completed his residency training at the Harvard Otolaryngology Residency Program and subsequently completed his otology and neurotology fellowship training at Mass Eye and Ear. Upon completing his fellowship in 2014, he immediately joined the hospital’s faculty as an attending surgeon and investigator. He has since treated some of the most complex ear disorders and been named a “Top Doctor” by Boston magazine. Meanwhile, his research has helped lay the groundwork for new drug delivery methods and insights into the underlying causes of hearing loss.
In 2021, Dr. Jung was awarded the Norman Knight Leadership Development Award in recognition of his exceptional promise as a future leader within otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. His leadership of the Joseph B. Nadol, Jr. Surgical Laboratory has already helped countless trainees reinforce their core competencies in medical knowledge and surgical technique.
