Earlier this month, Gregory W. Randolph, MD, FACS, FACE, hosted Massachusetts Eye and Ear's sixth biannual intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) certification course for thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

Under a new name, “Endocrine Technology Course: Certifications in Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring and Parathyroid Auto Fluorescence for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery,” this is the only course of its kind offered in the United States. It provides in-depth guidance to employ IONM in a standardized format and to optimally use the IONM data for surgical decision making. It also aims to demonstrate and discuss the utility of parathyroid auto fluorescence technology for intraoperative parathyroid gland detection.

The faculty included Dr. Randolph, Peter Angelos, MD, of the University of Chicago, and former Mass. Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School thyroid fellow Whitney E. Liddy, MD, of Northwestern University. There were seven participants who came from across the United States, as well as Hong Kong, Turkey, Saudi-Arabia, and Pakistan.

Next course is scheduled for May 1– 2, 2020.
