 

#  Resident Ciersten Burks, MD, Awarded Underrepresented Physician of Tomorrow Award by the Massachusetts Medical Society

Ciersten Burks, MD, a graduating otolaryngology–head and neck surgery (OHNS) resident at Mass Eye and Ear, has been awarded the [Underrepresented Physician of Tomorrow Award](https://www.massmed.org/News/Press-Releases/Dr--Ciersten-Burks-wins-Massachusetts-Medical-Society-s-Underrepresented-Physician-of-Tomorrow-Award/) by the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS).

According to the MMS, the award recognizes an underrepresented-in-medicine student or trainee who demonstrates exceptional advocacy, scholarship and leadership.

Dr. Burks, who will begin her facial plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship this summer at the University of Minnesota. She has worked with several mentors to better understand disparities existing among patients with head and neck cancer. Putting her expertise into action, Dr. Burks has also helped organize the “Eye, Ear and Eat Free Health Clinic,” which offers head and neck cancer screenings, hearing screenings and other medical services to underserved patients in Boston.
