#  Harvard Otolaryngology Awarded ACGME Back to Bedside Grant

 The Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear has been awarded an [Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) *Back to Bedside*](https://www.acgme.org/Residents-and-Fellows/Back-to-Bedside/Back-to-Bedside-Project-List) grant.

 The *Back to Bedside* initiative is designed to empower residents and fellows to develop transformative projects that foster meaning and joy in their work. It also allows them to engage on a deeper level with their patients. By creating a learning collaborative made up of resident- and fellow-led research teams, this program encourages trainees to create innovative strategies for increasing time with patients and improving physician and patient well-being.

 This year, the *Back to Bedside* program funded 33 of more than 200 proposals, which are to be completed by 2021. The Mass. Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School team will focus on "humanizing the head and neck cancer patient." Patel, MD](https://www.masseyeandear.org/education/otolaryngology/residency/residents/krupa-patel), [Tara E. Mokhtari, MD](https://www.masseyeandear.org/education/otolaryngology/residency/residents/tara-mokhtari), and [Ciersten A. Burks, MD](https://www.masseyeandear.org/education/otolaryngology/residency/residents/ciersten-burks). [Stacey T. Gray, MD](/people/stacey-gray), and [Mark A. Varvares, MD, FACS](/people/mark-varvares), will serve as project mentors.
