#  Dr. Matthew R. Naunheim Presented Norman Knight Award

[Matthew R. Naunheim, MD, MBA](https://doctors.masseyeandear.org/details/114), a fellowship-trained laryngologist at Mass Eye and Ear, has been named the recipient of the Norman Knight Leadership Development Award. The award was endowed by Norman Knight, a self-made broadcast pioneer and media mogul who has been a passionate champion of Mass Eye and Ear for more than 25 years. Recipients are selected for their exceptional promise as future leaders within their specialty in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at Mass Eye and Ear.

Thanks to Mr. Knight’s generosity, the award provides junior faculty members with funding to help them establish a career in academic medicine during the early years of their practice. Awardees may use the funds for research, equipment or any other approved career development purposes.

Dr. Naunheim, an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School, stands at the forefront of patient quality-of-life research. He not only graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency training at the Harvard Combined Residency Program in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, but he also earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, where he learned to use advanced econometric methodologies for quantitatively understanding patient preferences and outcomes.

At Mass Eye and Ear, Dr. Naunheim specializes in in voice, breathing and swallowing problems. He often cares for patients with complex laryngeal pathologies, such as laryngeal cancer, laryngeal dysplasia, airway narrowing and vocal cord paralysis, to name a few. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his paper on safe-singing practices was voted “Best Clinical Medicine Paper of 2021” by *Journal of Voice.*

[Derrick T. Lin, MD, FACS](https://doctors.masseyeandear.org/details/26), Associate Chief of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Mass Eye and Ear, presented this year’s award to Dr. Naunheim at the June 7 Spring Meeting of the Trustees and Medical Staff at Mass Eye and Ear.

“Dr. Naunheim’s leadership and commitment to his specialty encapsulate what it means to receive the Norman Knight Award,” said Dr. Lin. “Our department is excited watch his career unfold and witness the many lives he will surely touch through his research and clinical practice.”
