Matthew G. Crowson, MD, an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School and an ENT surgeon in the Otology and Neurotology Division at Mass Eye and Ear, was recently appointed a Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Research Training (BIRT) Fellow at Harvard Medical School.

The BIRT Program is a consortium of leading informatics laboratories at Harvard University funded by a grant from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. The program’s postdoctoral fellows receive opportunities to train, research and collaborate alongside senior leaders in biomedical informatics at Mass General Brigham (MGB). The program lasts for two years, culminating in a Harvard Medical School Master of Biomedical Informatics degree.

Dr. Crowson has been paired with David Bates, MD, MS, medical director of Clinical and Quality Analysis, Information Systems at MGB, who will serve as his two-year mentor in the program. Together, Dr. Crowson and Dr. Bates, who also serves as chief of the Division of Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will conduct research on applying data science to health care delivery challenges at Mass Eye and Ear and MGB.

"I’m excited to work alongside Dr. Bates, whose experience tackling some of the world’s most challenging patient quality and safety issues will be an invaluable resource and opportunity,” said Dr. Crowson, whose research interests include applying artificial intelligence to health care. “How we’re able to apply data to our own patient quality and safety issues here at Mass Eye and Ear will help us improve outcomes for our patients and better align us with value-based care.”
