Congratulations to [Giovanni Battistella, PhD](https://researchers.masseyeandear.org/details/487), Instructor in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, who received the 2024 Mass Eye and Ear Fellowship Award through the 29th annual Eleanor and Miles Shore Development Awards Program.

The Eleanor and Miles Shore Development Awards Program supports the academic success of junior faculty who are balancing early careers with significant responsibilities. Awards are funded by Harvard, affiliate institutions and private donors and may be used by a junior faculty to protect time from clinical, teaching, or other responsibilities while pursuing academic work. Funding could also be used for research or programmatic expense support at a time when the early career faculty member does not yet have independent funding.

Dr. Battistella, investigator in the Dystonia and Speech Motor Control laboratory at Mass Eye and Ear, will be using the $30,000 grant accompanied by the Mass Eye and Ear Fellowship Award to further his research project.

This research project aims to identify brain imaging markers of this variability based on the knowledge that individual’s capacity to produce and modulate sounds is controlled at the neural level. Dr. Battistella and his team will use advanced experimental protocols based on MRI to pinpoint the biological bases of voice feminization outcome variability, which would offer theoretical knowledge and the scientific framework to guide future novel translational applications for increasing the success rate of laryngeal surgical treatments.
