Giovanni Battistella, PhD, Instructor in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Seth Robbins Mass General Neuroscience Transformative Scholar in Tinnitus Research Award. The award supports junior investigators conducting laboratory or clinical research on tinnitus and is [one of five Transformative Scholar Awards](https://www.massgeneral.org/neuroscience/education/request-for-proposals). Tinnitus, or ‘ringing in the ear,’ is a common, debilitating hearing disorder affecting 35-to-50 million people nationwide. No treatment options currently exist for the condition.

With the support of his grant, Dr. Battistella, who also serves as an Investigator in the Dystonia and Speech Motor Control Laboratory at Mass Eye and Ear, will aim to uncover objective imaging biomarkers of tinnitus that can ultimately inform the design of novel treatment options for the condition. He will also investigate the effect of co-occurring hearing loss on the pathophysiological signatures of tinnitus.
