#  Dr. Barbara Herrmann Received 2024 Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award

 Congratulations to [Barbara S. Herrmann, PhD,](/people/barbara-herrmann) Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School, for receiving the 2024 Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.

 The Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award honors an individual for exceptional contributions to communication sciences and disorders spanning at least 20 years. These contributions may include clinical service, supervision or administration of clinical programs, clinical research, or other efforts advancing clinical excellence. Dr. Herrmann was honored for more than 40 years of extraordinary service as an audiologist, scientist and educator.

 Dr. Herrmann was recruited to Mass Eye and Ear in 1981 to establish the auditory evoked response laboratory, where she studies the electrophysiology of the human auditory and vestibular systems. As a patient-focused audiologist, she balanced her clinical care with a research commitment to advancing understanding of these systems' underlying mechanisms and improving diagnostic and treatment-monitoring methods.

 Since joining Mass Eye and Ear, Dr. Herrmann has helped develop state guidelines for newborn hearing screening and has been instrumental in the development and instrumentation of the testing system for those screenings. Furthermore, she helped initiate the Mass Eye and Ear Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program and establish the Mass Eye and Ear Rehabilitation Center, which helped address the need for integrated aural rehabilitation for patients and families.

 In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr. Herrmann is an admired educator who has trained generations of students and professionals in various academic positions, including at Harvard Medical School. She is well-known for her efforts to develop and maintain one of the largest teaching and research databases to inform evidence-based practice protocols and improve patient care.

 Dr. Herrmann accepted this prestigious award on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the annual American Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention held in Seattle, WA. She was surrounded by supportive colleagues who were thrilled to celebrate her well-deserved achievement.
