Last week, Harvard Medical School Professor of Otolaryngology and Director of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Division at Massachusetts Eye and Ear [Dr. Gregory Randolph](https://www.masseyeandear.org/find-a-physician/r/randolph-gregory), alongside Dr. Peter Angelos of the University of Chicago and Dr. Whitney Liddy of Northwestern University, hosted the fourth annual [Intraoperative Neural Monitoring (IONM) Certification Course for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery](https://www.masseyeandear.org/for-professionals/courses-events/intraoperative-neural-monitoring-certification-course) at Mass. Eye and Ear.

As the only course of its kind in the U.S., it aims to provide guidance to employ IONM in a standardized format and encourage its use in surgical decision making. The course is interactive and provides one-on-one intensive surgical, anesthesia, and monitoring instruction. It includes lectures, an observation in the OR with a real-time demonstration of IONM set-up and applications during surgery, and interactive case discussions with a simulation model.

This year, the two-day course brought people from all over the U.S. as well a China and Turkey to Boston. The next course is scheduled for February 8–9, 2019.
